Building Muscle from the Inside Out
Since getting certified to teach yoga from CorePower Yoga in 2009, it has become so apart why the core is such an important part of your body that a lot of time gets pushed to the side. For that reason it has become so important for me to work on my core and help those with their core when personal training clients or teaching yoga. Even more so now that I have become a mom and stretched my core to ‘it’s max.’ Getting a strong healthy core back after our girl was a journey with in itself, but very important to work on basics. Now I feel stronger than ever and it is all because of the connection with my core.
I like to think of the core as the lifeline to one’s life and I will awaken core muscles if they have been sleeping! I like to spend 5-10 mins a class or session focusing on core strengthening and usually by the end of it there is some moaning and groaning going on, which means I’m doing my job right..hehe.
Most people just think of the ‘core’ as the ‘6 pack’ muscles. It is so much more than that! It starts with the pelvic floor muscles, all the muscles on the front side of you stomach to below your diaphragm, to your mid-back muscles from above your pant line to mid-back or right below your should blades. Another great way to picture it is like a corset a women would wear back in the day.
It is CRAZY to think that our CORE is actually made up of 29 muscles!! Right?!? Mind blown! So we got to make sure and target ALL 29 of those bad boys. Harvard posted a great article of how your core effects everyday moves and body health to those who are active and how it helps with your activities, The real-world benefits of strengthening your core . From working on my own core and helping those I train, it is amazing to see the difference in performance and over all strength change once the core is stronger. Once the core is built up and strong there is less risk for injuries to other parts of the body because you have a firm foundation working from the inside out. But my core is back and I’m stronger than ever!
After having our girl I fell in love with pilates after a local pilates studio opened, AMP Pilates. That is when I found my TRUE core and how to apply what I learned in pilates and translate it to my other workout disciplines; whether it is a Crossfit workout, Spartan Race training, Cycling, Yoga or HIIT. My core has NEVER felt SO strong than it does now, which I have seen my whole strength increased and I truly give credit to my core being so strong and then the rest of my body was able to follow!
