The 2017 Garden Experiment
Growing up we had a huge garden at our house. It seemed like everyone in our life had some sort of garden whether it were a few plants in pots around the yard or a gigantic garden the size of most ‘city folks’ yards. My Grandparents had one of those enormous gardens, which I have many memories from; summers picking fresh veggies to bring back home with us and eat while we were visiting. It seemed like when I was little the veggies never ended and now I wish I all those veggies as much as I did when I was growing up.

Last year we thought it was a good time to plant a few things in our planter box because we thought it was a good age for our daughter to start helping, she was 2yo. I think that was a little to young for her to understand what was going on and actually be excited to help. Our dogs thoughts our plants tasted better while they were growing so before they even produced anything our dogs had chewed the plants
down to the dirt. SO needless to say our garden did nothing last year.
Towards the end of summer last year our girl loved going over to her Nana and Pop’s house and picking veggies, she slowly got gardening and enjoyed harvesting and eating the veggies that she got from the garden. We decided this year we would try again and do a better job of keeping our dogs out of the garden so we MIGHT actually have some produce. We started with just a few items and we will see how well our ‘green thumbs’ do and go bigger next year if it does well this year.

This year we are going to try strawberries, green peppers, jalapeƱos, green beans, peas and corn, so we will see how they do! We had a fun afternoon planting them. Nana and Pop came over, our girl got her new garden tools to help us plant and maintain our garden! Hubby put up a fence around to hopefully keep the dogs out of the garden as well as any other little animals that may want to snack in our garden! It was a fun event for us all to be involved in.
Now that it is all planted we will wait and see what happens.
What are some of your secrets for gardening or what do you love about gardening?
I’m excited for the adventure this spring and summer with our girl. It brings back memories for me from when I was little and spent the time in the garden at my folks as well as grandparents. We are ALL about making memories and creating experiences for our family. Whether this garden survives or not we will have a story to tell at the end!
